Additional Information

  • 1891 Census
  • In 1891, aged 5, my great-grandfather was living with his parents, Richard H Collett and Catherine, and his two older sisters at 130 Branstone Road, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire.
  • Richard, aged 34, was a plasterer born in Saxmundham, Suffolk.
  • His wife Catherine was aged 30, and born in Pinxton, Derbyshire.
  • My great-grandfather's sisters, Bertha (aged 10) and Rose A (aged 8) are both listed as 'scholars' so presumably they attended school. All three children are listed as being born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.
  • 1901 Census
  • In 1901, aged 15, John Henry was still living at home, although the family were now living at 20 Blenheim Street, Chelsea, London. His occupation is a little unclear, but it looks as if he might have been a guard for a carman (horse-drawn delivery driver), so perhaps he was being trained up and helping the actual carman! He is stated as being born in Eastwood, now in Essex.
  • Richard H, his father, aged 44, remains a plasterer from Saxmundham (now Norfolk), but he seems to now have a new wife called Rose, aged 28. Apparently from Frensham, there is an additional annotation that states 'English born not stated', suggesting that perhaps she was not English at all. (Whatever happened to Catherine is unclear; in addition, despite claiming to be married, Richard and Rose did not officially tie-the-knot until 1923!)
  • Richard and Rose seem to have had a son, also called Richard, aged 6 months, and presumably my great-grandfather's step-brother. He was born in Chelsea.
  • 1911 Census
  • On Monday 3 April 1911, my great-grandfather was now living at 15 Chipstead Villas, Coulsdon, Surrey, which was a single room in a tenement block. Aged 24, he was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire and his occupation is that of a plasterer, following in his father's footsteps.
  • He is now married to Laura, aged 20, who was born in Coulsdon. It says they have been married only a year, and have yet to have any children.
