Additional Information

  • 1861 Census
  • In 1861, my great-great-grandmother was aged 1, living at home with her parents, Richard and Maria, at Red House Marsh, Nutfield, Surrey, with his four older siblings (Elizabeth, William, James and Rosa), along with her grandmother Martha Main, her aunt Caroline Coward and step-sister Caroline Main.
  • Richard (aged 32) is an agricultural labourer from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Maria (aged 34) is also from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Caroline Main (aged 15) is a domestic servant from Nutfield, Surrey. The record describes her as a unmarried and a daughter-in-law to Richard, suggesting that perhaps this was Maria's daughter which she had out of wedlock, before they were married.
  • Elizabeth (aged 9), William (aged 7) and James (aged 5) are all listed as scholars (presumably they attended school) and are all from from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Rosa (aged 3) and Jane are also from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Martha Main (aged 74), Richard's mother-in-law, is listed as being a former wife (the occupation of her husband being illegible) from Bletchingly, Surrey.
  • Caroline Coward (aged 38), Richard's sister-in-law, is listed as a laundress (although the entire occupation is illegible) from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • 1871 Census
  • In 1871, Jane (aged 10) is now living with her grandparents, Thomas and Sarah Lee, their son James and another granddaughter Alice, at White House, Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Thomas (aged 67) is an agricultural labourer from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Sarah (aged 57) is from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • James (aged 37) is married (but no information about his wife) and is also an agricultural labourer (presumably working with his father) from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Jane (my great-great-grandmother) and Alice (aged 11) are both listed as scholars (so presumably attended school) and both are from Nutfield, Surrey. Alice is likely to be James's daughter.
  • 1881 Census
  • In 1881, J M (aged 24) was now married to George with two children (Thomas and George) living at No 7 Star Cottages, Chipstead, Surrey.
  • George (aged 27) was listed as a labourer from Worth, Sussex.
  • J M is from Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Thomas (aged 3) and George (aged 1) are both from Croydon, Surrey.
  • In addition, they seem to have two lodgers, Charles Seagrove (aged 20) and Edwin Chamberlain (aged 22). Charles was an excavator (R L) from Horsham, Sussex, and registered as deaf. Edwin was a labourer from Berkshire.
  • 1891 Census
  • In 1891, Jane M, now aged 31, and her husband George (aged 37) are now living at 2 Lime Works Cottage, Coulsdon, Surrey, with six children (Thomas, George, Elizabeth, James, Gertrude E and Jane M).
  • George is recorded as as a lime burner from Worth, Sussex.
  • Jane M was born in Nutfield, Surrey.
  • Thomas (aged 12) is listed as being a domestic house boy from Croydon, Surrey.
  • George (aged 10), Elizabeth (aged 8) and James (aged 5) are all listed as scholars (so presumably they attended school). Along with Gertriude (aged 4) and Jane M (aged 1), all children were recorded as being from Croydon, Surrey..
  • 1901 Census
  • In 1901, Jane M and her entire family (husband and nine children!) are now living at 1 Halls Cottage, Coulsdon, Surrey.

  • Elizabeth (aged 18), Jane M (aged 11), Laura (my great-grandmother, aged 9) Alice B (aged 7), William (aged 5), Ernest F (aged 2) and Arthur (aged 11 Months) are all listed as being born in Coulsdon, Surrey.
  • With only four rooms at the cottage, it must have been extremely tight for all of them!
  • 1911 Census
  • In 1911, Jane (aged 50) and George (aged 58) are now living at 15 Chipstead Villas, Coulsdon, Surrey, along with six children (James, Alice, William, Earnest, Arthur and Herbert) and his niece, Kathleen Lightfoot.
