Additional Information

  • 1881 Census
    • In 1881, my great-grandfather (aged 5) was living with his parents, George and Maria, and his three siblings (Frederick, Ernest and Edith) at 38 Essex Road, Brighton, Sussex.
    • George (aged 33) was a 'domestic coachman and he was born in Redhill, Surrey.
    • His wife, Maria (aged 31) was born in Swansea, Glamorgan.
    • Frederick (aged 6) and my great-grandfather were all listed as scholars, so presumably they attended school, whilst Ernest (aged 3) and Edith (aged 1) would have been too young. Frederick is listed as being born in Charwood, Surrey, although the other siblings (including my great-grandfather) were all born in Brighton, Sussex.
    • The family also had a lodger, Ann Manson (aged 80) who was a 'hawker' (street vendor), widowed and born in Westmeath, Ireland.
  • 1891 Census
    • In 1891, Arthur Herbert was aged 16 and living at home with his parents, George and Maria, and three siblings at 4 McKays Buildings, Shoreditch, London.
    • George (aged 44) is still a domestic coachman (with an added notation of 'groom'), although his place of birth is recorded as 'not known'.
    • Maria (aged 42) is from Swansea, South Wales.
    • 'George' Frederick' (aged 17) is a van porter (added note of carman) from Charlwood, Surrey.
    • Arthur Herbert is an invoice clerk for a stationery business (presumably the railway!) from Brighton, Sussex.
    • Edith 'Minnie' (aged 12) and a younger brother Sydney Edgar (aged 5) are both scholars (presumably attending school). Edith is from Brighton, Sussex, whereas Sydney is from Paddington, London.
    • Ernest is missing, as he had died in 1887.
  • 1901 Census
    • In 1901, Arthur Herbert (aged 25) is still living with his parents, George and Maria, and two siblings, at 1 Ensor Mews, Kensington, London.
    • George (aged 53) is still a domestic coachman from Surrey (but place recorded as 'not known').
    • Maria (aged 51) is from Swansea, Glamorgan.
    • Arthur Herbert is a station clerk from Hove, Sussex.
    • Sydney E (aged 14) is from Paddington, London. A new sibling returns to the family - Kathleen M (aged 19) from Kempton, Sussex. Where she was in 1891 is unknown.
  • 1911 Census
    • On Monday 3 April 1911, my great-grandfather (aged 35) was living with his wife, Fanny Eliza, and his two sons, Harry Charles (my grandfather) and his younger brother, Kenneth, in Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey. He was a Corn Merchant and manager of his own store, and was born in Bermondsey, London.
    • Fanny Eliza (aged 38) was born in Feltham, Middlesex. They had been married for 13 years.
    • Harry Charles (aged 7) and Kenneth (aged 4) were both born in Ashtead, Surrey.
    • The property, which presumably included the store, had four rooms listed as 'dwelling space'.
