When Harry Charles Quaintance was born on 10 December 1903 in Ashtead, Surrey, his father, Charles, was 25 and his mother, Eliza, was 34.


He married Irene Gatford on 10 November 1928. They had five children in 15 years.


He died on 3 February 1988 at the age of 84.

  • 1911 Census
    • On Monday 3 April 1911, my grandfather (aged 7) was living at home with his parents, Charles Abraham and Fanny Eliza, and his younger brother, Kenneth, in Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey.
    • Charles Abraham (aged 35) was a Corn Merchant and manager of his own store, and was born in Bermondsey, London.
    • Fanny Eliza (aged 38) was born in Feltham, Middlesex. They had been married for 13 years and had two sons. 
    • My grandfather's brother, Kenneth was aged 4, and both children were born in Ashtead, Surrey.
    • The property, which presumably included the store, had four rooms listed as 'dwelling space'.

  • Here is a copy of the regimental roles for the East Surrey regiment that my grandfather enrolled with on 4 December 1922 at Sutton, aged 18. He was listed as a 'shop assistant'(possibly helping our with his father!), and his next kin is listed as his father, living at 4 Parkside, Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton.
  • Marriage Register 1928
  • Here is a copy of the marriage register with my grandfather's listing. Harry Charles (aged 25) married Irene Gatford (my grandmother, aged 23) on 10 November 1928 at All Saint's Church, Carshalton, Surrey. His occupation is listed as a bricklayer, and his residence at 19 Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton. His father, Charles Abraham, is listed as being a painter.
  • Irene's residence was at 17 Colston Avenue, Carshalton, and her father, Arthur Herbert, is listed as a clerk.
  • Interestingly, whilst it seems that Irene's father was one of the witnesses, the other is an unknown (and unreadable) name, possible 'W G Pickering'.

  • In 1939, my grandfather was living with his wife, my grandmother, and their two oldest sons (Uncle Ron and Uncle Ken), at 36 Courtney Crescent, Carshalton.
  • Harry Charles is listed as a bricklayer, and his date of birth is 10 December 1903.
  • Irene is listed as undertaking unpaid domestic duties (so, housewife!), and her date of birth is 10 May 1905.
  • Both Ronald and Kenneth are listed as 'at school', and their dates of birth are 29 August 1929 and 5 March 1934 respectively.
