Additional Information

  • 1851 Census
  • In 1851, George was registered as an 'infant' as he was merely 1 month old. His parents, George and Frances, were living in Town Hill, Maresfield, Sussex, with their other children (Frances and Cornelius) and two lodgers, Joseph Card and Spencer Fester.
  • George (my great-great-great-granfather) was aged 31, and listed as a 'journeyman miller' (suggesting he completed an official apprenticeship). His place of birth is recorded as 'not known', in Surrey.
  • Frances (my great-great-great-grandmother) was aged 30, and her place of birth is recorded as Buxted, Sussex.
  • Frances (the eldest daughter) was aged 10 and Cornelius was aged 3. Both were born in Maresfield, Sussex, along with George (my great-great-grandfather).
  • Joseph (aged 24 from Buxted, Sussex) and Spencer (aged 22 from Maresfield, Sussex) were both registered as lodgers, and their occupation as gardeners.
  • 1861 Census
  • In 1861, my great-great-grandfather was aged 10, and was now one of six siblings at home with their parents, George and Frances, living at Batts Cottage, Maresfield, Sussex.
  • George (the father, aged 40) is an agricultural labourer, is now from Warnham, Sussex.
  • Frances (the mother, aged 40) is now from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • Frances (the daughter, aged 20) is a dressmaker and along with all her younger siblings, is listed being from Marefield, Sussex.
  • Cornelius (aged 13) is also listed as an agricultural labourer (presumably working with his father).
  • George is listed as a scholar, along with his younger brother Joseph (aged 7), so presumably they both attended school.
  • Henry R (aged 3) and Alfred S (aged 8 months) complete the family household.
  • In addition, they have another lodger, William Stakely (aged 71), who is listed as an agricultural labourer from Rotherfield, Sussex. (He may have actually been Frances's father, William Stapley.)
  • 1871 Census
  • In 1871, George (aged 20) was still living at home with his father (also George) although his mother had died a few years earlier. They were now living at Horney Common, Maresfield, along with three siblings (Joseph, Raymond and Alfred T), a servant (Ann Vinall) and a nephew (George Goldsmith).
  • George (the father) was aged 50, and is still an agricultural labourer from Warnham, Sussex.
  • George (my great-great-grandfather) although with Joseph (aged 17) and Raymond (aged 14, using his second name rather than Henry) are all presumably working with their father as agricultural labourers. The youngest son, Alfred T (aged 11) was also working with his father and brothers, but listed as a 'Carterboy' (so, employed to drive the cart). All sons were listed as being from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • Ann Vinall (aged 53) was being employed as a housekeeper, from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • George Goldsmith, George (the father's) nephew is aged 24 and listed as an unemployed groom from Hailsham.

  • George was listed as a farm servant from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • Emma (aged 30) is from Uckfield, Sussex.
  • Emily J (aged 9) and Frances (aged 7, my great grandmother) are both listed as scholars (suggesting they attended school) and both from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • George the son (aged 2) is from Rotherfield, Sussex.
  • Alice (aged 1 month) is from Withyham, Sussex.
  • 1891 Census
  • In 1891, George, now aged 40, and his wife Emma (also aged 40) are living at Shoesbridges, Cowden, Kent, with five of their children (Rose, George, Alice, Alfred and William) and two nieces (Alice and Ellen).
  • George is recorded as an agricultural labourer from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • Emma is now also from Maresfield, Sussex.
  • Rose (aged 15) is from Rotherfield, Sussex. She was living with her uncle Edward Simmonds in 1881 at this very same address.
  • George the son (aged 13) is also from Rotherfield, Sussex.
  • Alice (aged 10) and Alfred (aged 7) are recorded as scholars (presumably they attended school). Alice is from Withyham, Sussex, whilst Alfred is from Cowden, Kent, as is their younger brother William (aged 2).
  • Alice (aged 20) and Ellen (aged 5) are recorded as George's nieces, and possibly Ellen was Alice's daughter (and with the same surname, Elphick) may have been out of wedlock. Alice is from Maresfield, Sussex, whilst Ellen is from Cowden, Kent.
  • 1901 Census
  • In 1901, George (aged 50) and Emma (also aged 50) are now living at Upper Plouehurst Road, Lingfield, Surrey, along with four of their children (George, Alice, William and Florence) and their grandson Albert.
