Charlotte Todd

My Mum's Mum's Mum

11 September 1876 - 18 May 1955

When Charlotte Todd was born on 11 September 1876, her father, George, was 24, and her mother, Charlotte, was 23.


She married Arthur Herbert Gatford on 4 September 1904 in Wandsworth, Surrey. They had three children during their marriage.


She died on 18 May 1955 in Kingsbridge, Devon, at the age of 78.

  • 1881 Census
    • In 1881, my great-grandmother (aged 4) was living with her parents, George and Charlotte, and her two siblings (Rose Ellen and George Henry) at Hills Yard, Peterborough, Northampstonshire. 
    • George (aged 26) was a wood labourer and he was born in Peterborough, Northampstonshire. 
    • His wife, Charlotte (aged 27) was born in Sutton, the Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire.
    • Rose Ellen (aged 3) and my great-grandmother were both listed as scholars, (although they seem a little young to attend school!), and along with George Henry (aged 10 months), they were all recorded as being from Peterborough, Northamptonshire.
    • The family also had a lodger, Charles Todd (aged 21) who was also a wood labourer. He was listed as being married and from Yarwell, Northamptonshire (presumably he was staying with relatives for work!).
  • 1891 Census
    • In 1891, Lottie was aged 14 and working as a general servant in the home of Francis and Maria Gibbs and their two daughters Alice M and Annie E, at 5 Westgate, Peterborough, Northampstonshire.
    • Francis (aged 60) was a poulterer and grocer from Thorney, Cambridgeshire.
    • His wife Maria (aged 58) was also from Thorney, Cambridgeshire.
    • Alice M (aged 28) and Annie E (aged 22) were both from Peterborough, Northampstonshire.
  • 1901 Census
    • In 1901, Lottie (aged 22) is now working as a servant to William and Susannah Finley, with their seven children (Peter J, Susannah M, Mary B, Maria G, William T, Robert B and James D), at 119 Hight Street, Putney, London.
    • William (aged 50) is a butcher from Ireland.
    • His wife Susannah (aged 42) is from Sivamsey, Cambridgeshire.
    • Their children, ranging from aged 4 to 16 have a variety of different places of birth, including Finsbury, London (Peter J), Ireland (susannah M and Mary B), Maryledbone, London ( Maria G and William T) and Putney, London (Robert B and James D). 
    • Lottie is listed as being from Peterborough, Northampstonshire.
    • Also in the household is Florence Harman (aged 23) who is working as a butcher's clerk (so presumably helping in the family business) and is from Peckham, London.
  • 1911 Census
    • On Monday 3 April 1911, my great-grandmother was now married to Arthur Herbert Gatford with two daughters, Irene (my grandmother, aged 6) and her sister Gladys, living at 14 St Anns Terrace, Lonsdale Road, Barnes, London. 
    • Arthur Herbert (aged 35) was a railway clerk for the GWR (Great Western Railway), and was born in Brighton, Sussex. 
    • Lottie (aged 33) was born in Peterborough, Northamptonshire. They had been married for 7 years, having two daughters.
    • Gladys (aged 3) and her sister, Irene, were both born in Barnes, London.
    • On the day of the census they had a visitor, John William Todd (aged 22) who was a SBA (Sick Berth Attendant) at the Royal Naval Hospital. Born in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, he was Lottie's younger brother.

  • Here is a copy of the marriage register with my great-grandmother's listing in 4 September 2901, when she married Arthur Herbert Gatford at Putney Church, Putney, London. She was 26 and living at 14 Danemere Street, Putney, whilst he was aged 28, listed as a clerk living at 1 Ensor Mews, Kensington. Their fathers are both recorded: George Gatford, a coachman, and George Todd, a Sawyer. Their witnesses are Lottie's father, George Todd, and Arthur's brother, George Frederick Gatford.

  • Here is a copy of the electoral register for Carshalton with my great-grandmother's listing at 17 Colston Avenue, Carshalton.

  • In 1939, Lottie is now living at 17 Colston Avenue, Carshalton, Surrey, with her husband, Arthur Herbert. Her date of birth is listed as 11 September 1876, whilst his is 15 February 1876. His occupation is a retired chief railway clerk, whilst she undertakes 'unpaid domestic duties' (housewife!).
